Every other format humans have used to consume information has an ending. A newspaper runs out of pages. A television programme finishes and the next one starts, with a break in between where you notice you're still sitting on the sofa. A book has a back cover. Even a phone call ends, if only because one person eventually has to go. The feed is the first format in ordinary life that has no ending built into it at all, and it turns out that the missing ending is not a minor design detail. It's arguably the whole mechanism.

Why an ending matters more than we think

Decision researchers have a concept called the stopping cue: some signal, however small, that tells you a natural unit of an activity has finished and it's a reasonable moment to ask whether to continue. A chapter ending is a stopping cue. A television programme's credits are a stopping cue. The plate being empty is a stopping cue for a meal. Stopping cues aren't there to make you feel guilty for continuing — they simply create a checkpoint, a moment where the question "more, or done?" gets asked at all.

Infinite scroll, as a design pattern, was built specifically to remove that checkpoint. There is no page two to load, because there is no page one that ends — content is fetched continuously, seamlessly, before you'd notice the seam. The result isn't that you decide to keep scrolling. It's that the moment where you might have decided never quite arrives.

Infinite scroll doesn't win the argument about whether to stop. It just makes sure the argument never starts.

Novelty-seeking and the feed

Underneath the missing stopping cue is a second, older mechanism: human attention is tuned to notice what's new. This isn't a flaw introduced by technology — it's a sensible evolutionary feature. A brain that reliably orients toward novel information in its environment is a brain that notices the changed sound in the grass, the unfamiliar face, the thing that's different from yesterday. Feeds exploit this directly by guaranteeing that the next item is, almost by definition, something you haven't seen — a new post, a new angle on a familiar topic, a new face. Nothing has to be objectively interesting for novelty-seeking to fire; it just has to be different from the last thing.

Layered on top of that is the well-documented effect of variable reinforcement: rewards that arrive on an unpredictable schedule are, across a huge range of species and contexts, more compelling than rewards that arrive predictably. Most of a feed is unremarkable. Occasionally something genuinely funny, moving, or useful appears, and because you can't predict when, the unremarkable stretches don't function as a reason to stop the way a boring chapter might. You're not scrolling because you expect the next post to be good. You're scrolling because sometimes it is, and you can't tell in advance which time that will be.

What this does not mean

It's tempting to conclude from this that scrolling is simply a design trap with no redeeming content, and that the fix is to avoid it entirely. That's too simple in both directions. There's a meaningful difference, documented in research comparing passive and active social media use, between scrolling that leaves someone feeling flat or slightly worse, and using the same platforms actively — messaging a specific friend, posting something, engaging in a real exchange — which tends not to carry the same cost and can genuinely support connection. The problem isn't the existence of feeds. It's the specific combination of passive consumption and a missing stopping cue, which together produce sessions that run longer than anyone intended and that people often can't clearly account for afterwards.

It's also worth resisting the temptation to treat this as evidence that scrolling is a moral failing or a sign of a "broken" attention span. The mechanisms here — novelty-seeking, variable reward, the absence of a natural checkpoint — would produce the same behaviour in almost anyone, because they're aimed at features of attention that are close to universal, not at some personal weakness.

Reintroducing the checkpoint

Because the core issue is a missing stopping cue rather than a lack of willpower, the most effective interventions tend to be ones that reintroduce a checkpoint artificially, rather than ones that rely on remembering to feel strong-willed mid-scroll — by the time you're several minutes in, the moment for a considered decision has usually already passed.

  • Set a specific, small number of "laps" you're allowed before checking in with yourself — three refreshes, not an open-ended session.
  • Use a screen-time or app-timer nudge not as a hard block but as a manufactured stopping cue: a checkpoint the app itself no longer provides.
  • Notice which platforms you use passively versus actively, and treat them differently — a five-minute check-in with a close friend's messages is a different activity from an open-ended feed, even if it happens on the same device.

A thought to keep

It isn't that your attention span has been ruined, or that you've lost some capacity earlier generations had. It's that you're using a format with no ending on a brain that is very good at noticing what's new and very bad at supplying its own checkpoints when none are offered. Put a stopping cue back in, even an artificial one, and the same brain that scrolled for forty unaccounted-for minutes will generally take it.
