The Attention Residue of Digital Life

You close the laptop after a video call that ran long and went badly, and sit down to help with homework. You're there, physically, answering questions, nodding along. But some fraction of your mind is still in the meeting, replaying a sentence someone said, drafting the reply you didn't get to give. You are in two places, doing one of them properly.

The organisational psychologist Sophie Leroy gave this phenomenon a name — attention residue — and once you know the term, you start noticing it everywhere, well beyond meetings.

What attention residue actually is

Leroy's research found that when people move from one task to another without finishing the first, a portion of their attention stays behind, still working on the unfinished task even as they try to focus on the new one. This isn't distraction in the usual sense of noticing something shiny. It's closer to a lingering cognitive thread that keeps running quietly, pulling on resources the new task needed.

Crucially, Leroy's work found that residue is worse when the first task was left unfinished and unresolved than when it was completed or deliberately paused with a clear plan to return. This detail matters more than it seems, because it points to something you can actually do about it — more on that shortly.

Why digital life produces so much of it

Before constant connectivity, most days had a smaller number of larger, more complete transitions: home to work, one meeting to the next, work to evening. Each transition came with natural closure — a commute, a change of room, a change of clothes — that gave the mind some signal that one thing had ended and another had begun.

Digital life has multiplied the number of transitions while shrinking the space between them almost to nothing. A message thread about a work problem, a quick look at a group chat, a video call, an email about something else entirely, back to the work problem — all within twenty minutes, all without leaving the same chair. Each of those switches likely leaves a small amount of residue, and because the transitions are so frequent, the residue rarely gets a chance to clear before the next one is added on top.

What this does not mean

Attention residue is not a sign of a disorganised mind or weak willpower — it appears to be a fairly ordinary feature of how attention works when tasks are left open, and it shows up in careful, high-performing people just as much as anyone else. It's also not evidence that multitasking itself is impossible; short, simple, well-separated tasks can be interleaved without much cost. The residue effect is strongest specifically when the first task was cognitively demanding and unresolved.

Why finishing (or properly parking) something matters

The practical implication of Leroy's finding is fairly specific: it's not switching itself that causes the worst residue, it's switching away from something unresolved with no plan. A task that's been deliberately paused — with a clear note of where it stands and what the next step is — seems to leave less residue than one simply abandoned mid-thought because something else interrupted it. This suggests that closure, even artificial closure, does real cognitive work.

In real life

Someone who ends a difficult call, jots a two-line note about what's unresolved, and takes a short walk to the kitchen before starting the next thing will generally arrive at that next thing more fully than someone who goes straight from the call into it. The difference isn't willpower. It's that the first person gave their attention somewhere to put down what it was still carrying.

A thought to keep

Being present for the next thing sometimes has less to do with the next thing, and more to do with how properly you left the last one.
