Not a yes or a no. The distinction that matters is whether the AI did the thinking or supported it — and you can usually tell from the finished work.

Should Kids Use ChatGPT for Homework?

The honest answer is that a blanket ban will not hold and a free-for-all will cost your child something real. The workable position is in between, and it rests on one distinction that is easier to apply than any policy: did the AI do the thinking, or did it support the thinking your child was already doing?

Why learning is the thing at risk

Learning does not happen when information arrives. It happens when a brain struggles to retrieve, assemble or produce something, gets it partly wrong, and corrects. The effort is the mechanism — this is why re-reading notes feels productive and tests badly, while trying to recall the material without looking feels awful and works.

This is exactly what makes AI different from previous homework shortcuts. A calculator removes arithmetic that was never the point of the lesson. A language model can remove the entire cognitive act the homework existed to produce. A perfectly good essay arrives, the box is ticked, and the thing the essay was supposed to build in the child did not get built.

The finished homework was never the product. The child was the product.

The test to apply

Forget policing which tool was open. Ask one question after the work is done, in a friendly voice, not an interrogating one:

Can you explain this to me without looking at it?

A child who used AI well will be able to. They will know why the argument runs in that order, what the tricky bit was, where they disagreed with the suggestion. A child who outsourced it cannot get past the first sentence, and both of you will know within about twenty seconds. This test works across every subject, requires no technical knowledge, and does not depend on catching anybody.

Four uses, ranked

From supporting to substituting
  1. Explaining — "I don't understand why this step works, explain it three different ways." This is close to a patient tutor and is the strongest use of the technology.
  2. Interrogating — "Here's my argument. What's the weakest part? What would someone who disagreed say?" Genuinely raises the quality of a child's own thinking.
  3. Producing raw material — brainstorming angles, generating practice questions, checking a translation. Useful, but the line to substitution is thin and children cross it without noticing.
  4. Generating the answer — "Write my essay on the causes of the First World War." The homework is complete and the learning is gone.

Worth saying plainly: the first two are better than most of what a child could otherwise get at 9pm on a Tuesday. A student who is stuck, whose parents cannot help with the subject, and who has no tutor now has something that will explain a concept as many times as they need without sighing. That is a real gain and the ban-everything position ignores it.

What to agree at home

If you think it is already happening

Lead with curiosity rather than accusation. "Show me how you used it" gets you far more than "did you cheat", partly because AI-detection tools are unreliable enough that an accusation you cannot substantiate destroys trust for nothing.

Then aim the conversation at self-interest rather than morality. Most children respond better to you will be sitting an exam in a room with no laptop, and this is how you find out whether you actually know it than to a lecture about integrity. The moral case is real, but the practical one is what changes behaviour in a teenager.

The skill underneath

Your child will spend their working life alongside these tools. The valuable capability is not abstinence and it is not fluent prompting. It is judgement: knowing when to use assistance, when to refuse it because the struggle is the point, and how to tell whether what came back is any good. That judgement is built by using the tools thoughtfully with an adult occasionally asking hard questions — which is more or less what homework, at its best, always was.

What this does not mean

It does not mean AI is a neutral instrument that becomes good or bad depending on use. These systems are confidently wrong, trained on material of uneven quality, and designed to please the person asking — none of which is ideal in something a child treats as authoritative. And it does not mean every household needs the same line: an eight-year-old learning to write and a sixteen-year-old revising for exams are not in the same situation. Set the line where the effort still belongs to your child, and check it with the one question that works: can you explain it to me?
